We’re sure you’ve all heard the well-known saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” but is this actually a true fact?
In reality, whilst it can be harder to train older pets to do new things, it isn’t impossible. It just takes a little extra time, attention and perseverance. As with any dog, it is best to follow a rewards-based training programme, using positive reinforcement. What this basically means is every time your older dog does as you ask – reward them immediately with something they really enjoy. Continue this until they have learnt the association between your command and their subsequent action.
