The British Shorthair is one of the UK’s first pedigree cats – at least a hundred years old – and is currently the most popular pedigree cat breed in the UK, according to the GCCF.

These cats are said to link back to Britain’s ancient street cats, whose ancestors arrived with the Romans between the first and fourth century, and were then bred with wild native cats. The accepted date of origin of the breed as we know it today is 1870. However, it took a lot of work to restore the breed’s numbers in the UK after the end of the Second World War. The breed has changed very little over the years and its popularity continues to grow.
